6 Ways to Pool Proof Your Hair This Summer

Posted:

We all love a dip in the pool, especially when summer temperatures soar. The pool however, does not love our hair. Chlorine and pool chemicals are notorious for stripping away shine, fading color, and leaving hair brittle and dehydrated. So, how do you pool-proof your locks?

Tip #1: SATURATE YOUR STRANDS

In order to keep your hair from absorbing damaging pool chemicals, let it absorb clean water instead. Before diving into the pool, use a bottle of spring water or a pool side shower to saturate every strand. The strands will soak up the clean water like a sponge, meaning they’ll absorb way less chlorine when you swim.

Tip #2: ADD AN EXTRA LAYER OF PROTECTION

In addition to soaking your hair with clean water before exposing it to a chlorinated pool, you can go one step further and coat your strands with a moisturizing conditioner or soothing hair oil like Mythic Oil, one of our salon favorites! A deep conditioner or oil will create a barrier that will keep pool water from penetrating your hair as you swim. These products also help prevent your hair from becoming overly dry and brittle. After swimming, shampoo as soon as possible to remove chlorine or chemicals, and pamper your hair afterwards with a deep moisturizing conditioner to rehydrate.

Tip #3: SHIELD AGAINST UV RAYS

Aside from the damaging effects of pool chemicals, the other enemy of your hair, while poolside, is the summer sun. The sun can intensify the color-fading effects of chlorine, bleaching and draining your color into a duller, less shiny version of itself. To shield your tresses against fading, apply a UV protectant spray before you venture out, or wear a broad brimmed hat.

Tip #4: GIVE YOUR COLOR A BOOST

If your color or shine starts to noticeably fade, a gloss or glaze is an easy way to revive it. Either of these salon services will boost shine and give your color a quick pick-me-up between your normal color appointments.

Tip #5: CLEANSE AND CLARIFY

If you’re a serious mermaid, and your schedule includes almost daily dips in the pool, your hair can benefit from a once-a-week clarifying shampoo to remove chlorine and chemical build-up. Clarifying shampoos are specially formulated to wash away damaging chemicals, as well as hard water minerals, product build-up, and other toxins that are not so good for your hair. After your shampoo, treat your hair to a nourishing masque to soothe, smooth, and restore any moisture that might have been removed during the clarifying process.

Tip #6:  MIND THE ENDS

The ends of your hair are the section that can become most damaged from frequent pool time. Chlorine and chemicals can cause split ends to become even more dry and frayed, and if left unchecked, the damage can travel up the hair shaft. A quick salon appointment to trim off those brittle ends will keep your hair healthy and minimize tangles.

Fine Hair: Tips for Success

Posted:

Fine or thin hair? It doesn’t have to be challenge. With the right products and hair care routine, you can have hair you’ll love. Learn how to style fine hair with success using our tips below.

BUILD VOLUME

loreal volumetry hair salon productsGravity is the enemy of fine hair. Fine, thin strands don’t stand a chance in maintaining a voluminous style on their own. A body-building set of hair care can help though. To keep hair from going limp, start with a shampoo and conditioner that will add density, like L’Oreal’s VOLUMETRY series. (This is a great line of hair care that we use at the salon which cleanses and nourishes hair without weighing it down.)

After shampooing, apply a lightweight mousse or a product like VOLUMETRY Anti-Gravity Root Lift Spray to the roots of your hair, focusing on one area at a time. Work it in with your fingers or wide tooth comb, and then style with a blow dryer and round brush to create lift at the scalp area. Salon perfect hair every time!

Another excellent option for adding volume to fine hair is to apply a thickening primer like L’Oreal Tecni Art Densite before styling. Just mist Densite onto damp hair from roots to ends, and use a wide tooth comb to work it through before you start styling. Use a blow dryer with a concentrator attachment to power dry hair one section at a time. As you’re drying each section, hold it upward away from your scalp to begin creating lift.

PROTECT AGAINST DAMAGE

mythic oil heat protectant hair salon productFine hair is more susceptible to damage than most other hair types. Those delicate strands are so easily fried by flat irons, scorched by the sun, or dehydrated by frequent blow drying. What follows is usually broken or split ends and dry, brittle texture. A little protection will go a long way toward keeping your hair healthy and strong.

As often as you can, opt for heat-free styling and air drying. On days when you need to blow dry, curl, or flat iron, apply a heat protectant to create a barrier between your hair and the surface of hot tools. At the salon, we love Mythic Oil Seve Protectrice. It coats your hair with a nourishing and protective veil for heat protection up to 446 degrees. For best results, apply while your hair is wet, distribute with a wide-toothed comb, and give the product 10 minutes to soak into your strands before drying and styling.

When outdoors, give your hair a layer of protection, too. Reach for a hat to safeguard your locks against damaging UV rays from the sun or mist your hair with a UV protection spray. Before diving into the pool or ocean, coat your hair with a layer of moisturizing conditioner to keep chemicals and salt from being absorbed.

ADOPT A NEW ROUTINE

Change your hair care routine to shampooing just a few times a week instead of daily. Washing and drying fine hair every day strips away the natural oils that keep it protected against moisture loss. Over cleansing and blow drying can also cause your hair’s outer cuticle layer to become rough and damaged.

On the days when you skip washing, use a dry shampoo like L’Oreal Fresh Dust to keep your scalp and style refreshed. Just spray a small amount of the product at the roots to absorb oil and give your hair a fragrant scent.

8 Super Foods For Gorgeous Hair

Posted:

What do wild salmon, lentils, eggs, and sweet potatoes have in common? They’re all amazing for your hair! If you're looking for a way to get shiny, faster growing hair from the inside out, keep reading to discover the 8 best super foods to feed your tresses.

Eggs.

Eggs are a hair superfood because they are so rich in biotin.   Biotin is a B vitamin that promotes hair growth and overall scalp health.  When your diet lacks this vitamin, your hair can become brittle and weak.

So whether you're a fan of omelets, quiches, or prefer your eggs sunny side up, know that you’re getting a healthy boost of hair growing power with every bite. In addition to eggs, other biotin rich foods are peanuts, almonds, wheat bran, salmon, low-fat cheese, and avocados.

Oysters.

Oysters are high in zinc, a mineral which contributes to healthy hair growth and tissue repair.  It also helps keep the oil glands around the hair follicles working properly.

Not a lover of the oyster?  Other foods rich in zinc are crab, clams, liver, lean beef, most nuts and seeds, peanut butter, wheat germ, fat-free yogurt, and cheese.

Sweet potatoes.

Bright orange and deep green colored vegetables are packed with Vitamin A, an amazing vitamin which keeps your hair shiny and moisturized.  Without Vitamin A, your hair can become dull, and your scalp can become flaky and prone to dandruff.

In addition to sweet potatoes, try carrots, kale, butternut squash, asparagus, pumpkin, dried apricots, cantaloupe and peppers. While these veggies are incredibly flavorful when cooked, if you slice them raw on a salad or serve them raw with a dip, you’ll get even more nutrients.

Protein.

Protein is the building block of hair. Hair gets its structure from hardened proteins called keratin. Without enough protein for keratin, your hair grows more slowly, and the individual strands that do grow are weaker.

For healthy growth, get an adequate amount of protein each day.  Try a variety of options including chicken, turkey, lean beef, fish, beans, and nuts.

Lentils.

Lentils and other legumes like kidney beans are great sources of iron-rich protein. Iron is important as it can boost hair growth. People who have problems with hair loss or hair growth tend to be iron deficient (especially women) so it’s important to have adequate amounts in your daily diet.

Good sources of iron include lean beef, chicken, wheat germ, turkey, egg yolks, whole grains, dried fruit, spinach, and beans.

NOTE:  Combine your iron-rich foods with other foods high in Vitamin C.  Vitamin C improves the body's ability to absorb iron.

Kiwi and other Vitamin C rich foods.

With their fuzzy brown skin and vibrant green inside, kiwis are some of the most interesting looking fruits on the market.  Their real charm, though, is that they are packed with Vitamin C, which not only helps your body absorb iron, but also keeps your hair from becoming dry and weak, splitting and breaking easily.  Vitamin C is also used to form collagen, a structural fiber that also contributes to younger looking skin.

The best Vitamin C sources other than kiwi? Broccoli, kale, green peppers, papaya, pineapple, mango, citrus fruits, and strawberries. Make a healthy hair smoothie by blending a mix of fresh and frozen Vitamin C rich fruits. Your skin will benefit, too!

Wild salmon.

Wild salmon is loaded with B Vitamins.    B Vitamins help to create red blood cells which carry oxygen and nutrients to your scalp and hair.  When your diet is low in B vitamins, your cells can starve, causing hair shedding, slow growth, or brittle hair that breaks easily.  Salmon is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids which support healthy scalp and skin.

In addition to salmon, try adding these B-rich foods to your menu:  sardines, herring, mackerel, shellfish, beans, chicken, oatmeal, eggs, peanut butter, fat-free and low-fat dairy foods, and fortified whole-grain cereals.

Healthy oils.

Healthy oils like olive, peanut, safflower, and sunflower can restore the shine of your hair. About a teaspoon a day will do the trick. Mix oils with herbs and other ingredients to make a healthy salad dressing or dip for veggies.

------------------------------------------------------
Nourishing your hair from the inside out will make a difference in the rate at which your hair grows as well as the strength of each strand.    Top quality hair care is important, too, and the stylists at our hair salon in Vero Beach FL are always happy to help you choose the best products to keep your locks looking their best!  Stop by the salon today!

2016 Top Hair Style and Color Trends

Posted:
Unlike years past, the top hair styles for 2016 are not only beautiful….they’re wearable and easy to achieve!

BOBS, LOBS & WOBS

Famous fashion icon Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion fades; only style remains the same.” This is true not only in the fashion world but also with styles like the bob. It’s a timeless cut, and always on point, regardless of other here-today-gone-tomorrow fads.

Whether you opt for a wavy bob (aka “wob”), a long bob (“lob”) or just the classic bob, you’ll be on trend for 2016. The versatility of this cut is what gives it such appeal with women of all ages—it can be worn tousled and textured, straight or wavy, and everything in between.

THE VICTORIA’S SECRET WAVE

Soft, voluminous waves that mimic the style of Victoria’s Secret runway models are huge this year. This is an easy style to create if you have thick hair with a lot of length, but even hair that lacks body can get the look of a Hollywood bombshell with the help of a high quality mousse (like L’Oreal’s Volume Envy), a blow dryer and curling iron.

FOR STEP BY STEP STYLING INSTRUCTIONS, VIEW THE VIDEO:

TWISTS, PONYTAILS, AND BRAIDS

Still a favorite this year are braids and ponytails, especially peek-a-boo braids added as subtle texture, and low braided ponytails that begin at the base of the neck. Simple twists and low twisted do’s at the nape of the neck are also hot--Marchesa and Zac Posen models along with models from Givenchy have all been spotted wearing low buns and twists.

NATURAL HUES

This year’s best color trends all nod toward the natural. Artificial shades are on their way out, and natural looking highlights and hair color are this year’s sought after hues. Beachy balayage highlights, anyone?

The coveted balayage look gives you hair that looks as though you spent weeks surfing on the California coast as opposed to hair that seems like you’ve spent a few hours sitting in a salon chair with a head full of foils. Many of our salon guests are fans of this technique because it’s a low maintenance style. The roots grow out without a “line” like a typical color service, meaning fewer trips to the salon and less expense over time. Look exquisitely gorgeous for less!

HAIR ACCESSORIES

Favorite accessories this year include headbands, hair brooches, Roaring Twenties-inspired draping hair chains with rhinestones, 40s inspired Marc Jacobs pins, and metallic wire wraps like Alberta Ferretti runway models. For special events, a few charms can be irresistible. Think of them as fairy dust for your hair! Whether you want to embellish a braid or chignon or add just a little sparkle to long strands here or there, accessories are a fun and frivolous way to turn lackluster strands into hair that makes a statement.

A simple chignon or roll-up style can be instantly transformed into party hair with the addition of a glittery comb (such as this Jennifer Behr piece) as a stunning accent.   To create a roll up style like the one above, use an ingenious flexible hair tool like "The Half Up" from Ulta.  It's a strong foam base with a slit in the middle that allows you to lock and roll your hair into a gorgeous style.  The Half Up base will be completely hidden and covered by your hair when you're done.

It doesn't get any easier than a ponytail!   For special events, use a texture product like Tecni.Art Volume Envy to give your hair extra body, and then sweep it to the side and secure into a loose ponytail.  Embellish with sparkly hair ornaments and you've got instant glam.

Add sparkle to a basic bun or top knot by adding a glittery band.  This is an easy way to get an elegant look in less than 10 minutes.

loreal volume envy hair salon productTIPS FOR HOLIDAY STYLING SUCCESS:

Most holiday hair styles work best when your hair has a little texture and grip. Here are a few ways to add texture to your hair so that it stays put once styled:
  •  Create texture with dry shampoo. Use a product like L’Oreal Fresh Dust applied at the roots to give your hair body and grip.
  • Work with hair that has been wash the day before, not the day of, your event. Next day hair has grip which is essential for updos and other styles where every strand needs to stay in place without slipping.
  • Use a thickening primer such as L’Oreal Tecni.Art Densite or Tecni.Art Volume Envy mousse. Both of these products are salon favorites, and they work well for giving hair volume and thickness.
  • Finish with a professional spray such as L’Oreal Infinium 3 for lasting hold.

hair color trends from Loreal
The top color trends for winter from L'Oréal Professionnel's IT Girls-- Josephine de La Baume and Nicole Warne.

TREND #1: WILD COPPER CONTOURING

Just as contouring with makeup can enhance your facial structure, the same applies when it comes to your hair. Contouring with hair color is a way to bring out the best in your facial features. By strategically using highlights and shading, you can exaggerate or soften areas, and subtly redefine contours of your face.
Notice how contouring is used to style the locks of French actress and singer, Joséphine de La Baume. Her beautiful copper toned hair is resplendent with artistically applied lighter strands, which help illuminate her face, sculpt her cheekbones and bring depth as well as texture to her curls.

Black is sophisticated & classic as well as sultry & vibrant. And….it’s the color chosen by Australian fashion and beauty super blogger, Nicole Warne---the persona behind Gary Pepper, one of the most influential fashion and style blogs in the world.
Nicole’s velvety black hue has hints of subtle violet which are a gorgeous complement to her skin tone. Nicole is also perfectly on trend for winter when it comes to her cut and style—a bouncy, wavy bob (wob). Find the Best Hair Style for Your Face Shape

Posted:

How do you get the perfect hair style?

One of the keys to getting the haircut that you LOVE is to choose a style that complements your face shape. If the wrong hair style is created for the wrong face shape, chances are it’s going to be a disappointment. This is why a haircut that looks absolutely stunning on one person can look not-so-stunning on another.

Getting the right cut for your facial shape involves using balance and an artistic eye to achieve the illusion of an oval shape, which is the most perfect and pleasing shape to the human eye. A flattering hairstyle is one that creates the illusion that you have a perfectly oval face. A well-executed haircut can make a round face appear longer, a long face appear wider, a square jaw appear softer and a tall forehead disappear!

Find your face shape below and discover what types of haircuts work best as well as what to avoid the next time you visit the hair salon.

SQUARE

Square faces have a linear shape and a strong, angular jaw. To balance the strong lines of your face, choose haircuts that will add softness and draw the eye away from harsh angles.

DO: Keep the length of your hair below your jaw. (Haircuts that stop at the jawline will make your face look squared off). Add texture in the form of curls, tousled waves, or choppy ends. Or add face-framing layers, romantic waves, or side-swept bangs. All of these will have a softening effect. A long bob (or lob) also works well, as the long textured layers soften cheek bones and help to mask facial width.

DON’T: Blunt straight-across bangs and bobs that are chopped off right at the jawline are both don’ts. They’ll emphasize the angular aspects of your face, making it look even more square-shaped.

OVAL

Faces with oval shapes tend to look good with just about any type of haircut and style.

DO: Consider your hair texture and choose a cut and style that will make the most of the natural structure of your hair. Other than that, oval faces can wear almost any hair style and look amazing.

DON’T: Extra long styles can disrupt the natural balance of your face. Avoid any style that is super long and also be careful about styles that add too much height on top of your head.

TRIANGLE

Triangular faces tend to be narrower at the top and wider at the bottom, with a strong distinctive jawline. This face shape can be easily balanced with cut and color techniques that draw attention away from the jaw.

DO: Draw the eye upward. At your salon appointment, ask for a haircut that add width at your crown and forehead to balance the width of your lower jawline. Add highlights at the temples, crown and fringe as an additional way of bringing the focus upward.

DON’T: Excessive fullness by your chin will only draw attention to the width of your lower face. Avoid choppy jaw-length layers, waves and curls near your chin, or anything else that adds width at your jawline.

HEART SHAPE

Heart shaped faces are like inverted triangles, with a delicate chin and wider cheekbones. (Think Reese Witherspoon.) The right cut and color looks amazing on this face shape.

DO: Draw attention downward. Balance your face shape with haircuts that add fullness around the jawline (like a chin length bob). Longer styles with choppy, chin length layers are also great. For color, try a look like ombre that has darker shades at the top blending into lighter shades from the chin down.

DON’T: Styles with lots of volume at the top should be avoided, as well as short boyish cuts and thick bangs. These styles throw off the balance of your face, adding weight on the top instead of the bottom.

CIRCLE

Rounder faces need haircuts and color that will help to elongate the face.

DO: At your salon appointment, go for softer styles that fall below your chin or longer. This will add length to a round face. You can also add height at the crown to create the illusion of length. Styles that are more asymmetrical than symmetrical work well for circular faces. Side-swept bangs and a side part work well, and so do choppy layers!

DON’T: Short curly hair and short wavy styles can make your face appear rounder. Chin length haircuts, blunt straight across bangs and styles that are parted down the middle can also add the illusion of extra width to a round face. Avoid these, and go for softer styles with length past the chin.

LONG

Oblong faces have consistent width, which can make them appear long and thin. The right haircut and color can add the illusion of width at the sides while helping to diminish length of a long face shape.

DO: Keep your hair full at the sides, with minimum height on top. Long waves, texture, and face framing layers that hit at the cheekbones and chin are a great way to add width. Opt for side parts and say yes to bangs, especially side swept bangs—they’re a great way to cover foreheads and help diminish length! For color, try highlights at the sides of your face from your temples to jaw area. This will create the illusion of width and roundness, too.

DON’T: Overly lengthy hair can cause a long face to appear even longer. Stay away from long hair styles that have no layers and no texture. Also avoid too much volume above your forehead -- this can add unwanted length to your face. Parts that run straight down the middle of the head are also not flattering for oblong face shapes.

How To Style A Pixie Cut

Posted:
Pixie cuts are not only totally trending right now, they're exceptionally versatile when it comes to getting a wide variety of looks.

One of our favorite methods of pixie styling at the salon involves using a sculpting paste to create definition and slightly disheveled texture. You can get the same results at home by using a matte sculpting product like L’Oreal Tecni Art Architexture.

Just take a small amount of the product and rub through your hands in the same way that you would apply hand lotion. Then, work your fingers through damp, towel-dried hair, moving from back to front, focusing on the roots. This will distribute the Architexture product throughout all your strands. Use a blow dryer to lift and style, moving your hair in different directions as you dry. Then use your fingers to twist, define and sculpt sections and pieces to create a contemporary, textured look.

5 Ways to Give Your Hair Incredible Volume That Lasts All Day

Posted:
hair salon brunette blowout style
Tips and techniques from L’Oreal Professionnel’s  top hair stylists on how to get stunning volume that will last all day!

TECHNIQUE #1:  BASIC ROUND BRUSHING WITH A BLOW DRYER

This is a fool-proof technique for getting volume every time!  First apply volumizing mousse to the roots of your hair and work it through with fingers or wide tooth comb.  Power dry your hair until it is about 80 to 90% dry.  Then use a large round brush and blow dryer to smooth and add lift at the same time.

hair salon blowout styling with round brushPlace the brush at your roots and wrap a section of hair around it.  Direct a stream of warm air onto it for a few seconds, and then gently brush down the hair shaft as you dry. When you’re almost finished, use the brush and the cool setting on the dryer to “set” each section with a blast of cool air for about 5 seconds.   The cool air will give your hair added shine in addition to helping your style stay in place for longer.

SALON TIP:  For best styling results, use a round brush with natural boar bristles and a wide barrel.   The boar bristles will give you gorgeous shine and volume without frizz.

TECHNIQUE #2:  ADDING VOLUME TO FINE HAIR

Fine, thin hair needs the help of a texturizing product to thicken strands so that they’re capable of sustaining high lift and volume.  L’Oreal Tecni Art Densite is a thickening primer that works perfectly for giving fine hair some muscle.  Just mist Densite onto damp hair from roots to ends, and use a wide tooth comb to work it through before you start styling.  Use a blow dryer with a concentrator attachment to power dry hair one section at a time.  As you’re drying each section, hold it upward away from your scalp to begin creating lift.

Next, reach for a round brush.  Warm the brush up a bit with the blow dryer, and start working with hair at the crown.  Roll a section of hair around the brush, direct a stream of warm air onto the barrel, and hold.  Then release and secure each curl with a pin near the scalp so that it can cool and set.   Continue all over your head.  For added curl, you can use a medium barrel curling iron to go back and curl each section, and then secure each curl again with a pin or clip and let cool & set for 10 to 15 minutes.

When hair has cooled, remove clips and use your fingers to gently fluff to get salon perfect hair.  It’s amazing how much volume you can get with this method.   As a finishing step, mist L’Oreal TechniArt Extreme Lacquer all over to give your curls all day hold.

TECHNIQUE #3:  CREATING HIGH VOLUME, HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR WAVES

This method works really well for long hair, and with a little product, your hair can get volume that lasts all day!

Start by applying L’Oreal Tecni Art Volume Envy Mousse to your hair.  Next, power dry with a blow dryer.   When hair is no longer damp, use a round brush with a large barrel to blow dry & style.  Then, working one piece at a time, mist a section with L’Oreal Tecni Art Infinium 3, and wrap it around the barrel of a curling iron.  Hold for a few seconds and then release.   When each curl is released, use your fingers to coil it back up, and secure it near your scalp with a hair clip or pin.  Continue doing this, until you have coils of curls all over your head.   After curls have had a chance to cool and set, remove the pins and lightly brush to create Hollywood glamour waves!  Mist once more with Infinium 3 for all day
hold.

TECHNIQUE #4:  VOLUME WITH VELCRO ROLLERS

If you’ve got a set of Velcro rollers, then you can create a great voluminous blowout in under 30 minutes.  This is perfect for when you can’t make it into the salon for a professional blowout, and for those hectic days when you’re running late and don’t have enough time to go through the entire shampoo, blow dry and style rigmarole.

To get the look----wrap 2 inch sections of dry hair around large Velcro rollers.  Then give each roller a shot of warm air from a blow dryer.  Mist lightly with L’Oreal Tecni Art Infinium 3 hair spray, and then let the rollers cool down for about 20 minutes while you’re doing your makeup.  When you take the rollers out, you’ll have a gorgeous blowout with great volume at the roots and bend at the ends.

TECHNIQUE #5:  BLOW DRY YOUR HAIR UPSIDE DOWN

By using this technique of drying your hair, you are guaranteed to create volume when you toss your hair right side up!  Apply a little Volume Envy mousse or Densite thickening primer to damp hair before you begin drying to give your hair added lift.   Blow dry hair upside down, and then flip hair right side up to fluff and style when you’re done.

Anti-Aging Skin Care Secrets -- Inside and Out

Posted:

Younger looking skin is rarely an accident.  It’s the result of being proactive with healthy diet and skin care habits as well as anti-aging products that work outside and inside on a cellular level.   The more positive and powerful habits you can put into place, the more you’ll see those fine lines and wrinkles lessen, and healthy radiant skin emerge.

NOURISH YOUR SKIN ON THE INSIDE

High nutrient foods help to repair skin tissue, reduce the risk of skin cancer, promote skin renewal, and neutralize free radicals that cause skin to sag and wrinkle.   Who doesn’t want all those amazing benefits?

For healthy, younger looking skin try these anti-aging foods:

Foods rich in omega fatty acids.    Fish and plant sources such as flaxseed, walnuts, salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, and rainbow trout are all high in Omega 3 fatty acids, the “good fat” that protects your skin against sun damage, nourish cells, and may also reduce the risk of certain forms of skin cancer.

Foods rich in beta carotene.  Carrots, apricots, pumpkin, sweet potato, and other yellow and orange fruits and vegetables are rich in beta carotene.   Beta carotene helps repair skin tissue and helps neutralize free radicals in the skin, keeping them from damaging the cells and helping to prevent wrinkles and aging.

Leafy green vegetables.  Leafy salad greens like spinach and kale contain lutein and other potent antioxidants that are important for normal skin cell development and healthy skin tone.

Selenium-rich foods.  Brazil nuts, cashew nuts, fresh tuna, sunflower seeds, eggs, wheat germ, broccoli, walnuts and whole-grain pasta and bread are high in the mineral selenium.  Selenium promotes elasticity and general skin health.   Studies suggest that a selenium-rich diet can help to protect against skin cancer, sun damage and age spots.

Foods rich in Vitamin C.  Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, oranges, papaya, guava, black currants, and kiwifruit are amazing when it comes to skin.  Packed with Vitamin C, they help boost the immune system, aid in the production of collagen, and fight against free radicals that cause aging and cell damage.  Studies show that people who eat foods rich in Vitamin C have fewer wrinkles and less age-related dry skin than those who don’t.

Foods high in Vitamin E.  Avocado, sunflower and corn oil, as well as nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts, pine nuts and others are great sources of Vitamin E. Vitamin E protects skin from oxidation and cell damage and supports healthy skin growth.

Antioxidant rich foods.  Foods high in antioxidants can have an amazing effect on your skin.  Pomegranates, for example, are full of inflammation-fighting antioxidants, and green tea may reduce your risk of skin cancer.  Other fruits that are loaded with antioxidants are cranberries, wild blueberries, raspberries and blackberries.  Beans (kidney, small red, and pinto), lentils, walnuts, pecans, artichokes, and Russet potatoes are antioxidant rich vegetables.

Foods containing zinc.  Zinc protects your cell membranes, helps maintain collagen, and promotes skin renewal.   A great source of zinc is the humble pumpkin seed.   Pumpkin seeds make a great crunchy snack, and they are also yummy when sprinkled on salads, trail mix, soup, yogurt or oatmeal.

EMPOWER YOUR SKIN ON THE OUTSIDE

Moisturize daily.   Your skin needs a daily dose of moisture to keep it looking radiant and hydrated.  If your skin is aging, you may need to apply moisturizer a couple of times a day instead of just once in order to protect against dryness.   At the salon, we love Luminesce Daily Moisturizing Complex.  It contains apple, lentil and watermelon extracts to moisturize your skin as well as a revolutionary growth factor complex that gives your skin an age-defying glow.   It also provides solar protection (SPF 30) to safeguard against harmful UV radiation.   Massage it into your skin after cleansing for a fresh and hydrated glow.

Nourish at night.
Just as it is important to moisturize your skin during the day, it’s also important to help your skin repair itself at night.  This is the easiest skin care habit of all because it can be done while you sleep!  Just apply a cream or serum like Luminesce Advanced Night Repair right before you turn in.  In the morning, you’ll get firm luminous skin that feels refreshed and invigorated.

Support your skin on the cellular level.
Not all skin creams are equal.   Some simply sit on the surface of your skin and do absolutely nothing.   To be truly effective, a skin care product needs to work on a cellular level.   Having a growth factor complex is another plus.   Our skin care experts at the salon recommend Jeunesse Cellular Rejuvenation Serum because it contains the highest possible percentage of growth factor complex derived from adult stem cells, and it works below the surface of your skin.  It gently diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, restores luminosity, and nourishes your skin with vitamins and antioxidants.

If you’re in the Vero Beach FL area, stop by our hair salon and check out our complete line of Jeunesse Luminesce skin care.   Every Jeunesse product is proven to reduce the signs of aging and give you youthful, radiant skin.   You can also order Jeunesse skin care online by clicking HERE.

10 Foolproof Ways to Get Frizz Free Hair

Posted:
hair smoothing
There’s nothing that can get your day started off on the wrong foot like frizzy hair.   It’s infamous for rearing its rebellious head on days when you’re short on time, stressed, or otherwise just not in the mood for a hair-taming routine.  And humid rainy days?  Well, that’s when your hair often throws the biggest tantrum ever.

We know how frustrating frizz can be, so we’ve made a quick list of tips that can help the next time you wake up with a hair crisis.

WHAT CAUSES FRIZZ?

Knowing what causes hair to frizz is half the battle of successfully keeping it under control.
If you could zoom in and view your hair under a microscope, you’d see that the outer cuticle layer of every strand of your hair is covered with tiny cells that overlap like shingles on a roof.  When those shingles lie flat and smooth, your hair looks sleek and defined.  When those shingles are raised, damaged and rough, they become a magnet for moisture in the surrounding air, and this causes your hair to swell and poof into a frizzy mushroom cloud.

Eliminating frizz is all about keeping that cuticle layer smooth and damage free so that those tiny shingles have less opportunity to raise and swell.

TIP #1  HYDRATE YOUR LOCKS

Frizzy hair is almost always dry, damaged, and dehydrated hair.    This is why we experience the craziest hair days when it is rainy or humid outside----our dry, thirsty hair is desperately trying to absorb moisture from the air, and it kinks and swells into a miserable mess in the process.

Hydrating your hair is essential to destroying frizz.  One of the best ways to do this is to switch to a gentle, hydrating shampoo (preferably one that is sulfate free) which will clean your hair without removing the natural oils that keep your strands soft, smooth, and protected against moisture loss.   Too often, shampoo has a stripping effect on hair, hurting it instead of benefiting it.  This is especially true of cheap drugstore shampoos which are laden with sulfates and harsh chemicals.  Instead, opt for a mild, salon quality shampoo that will nourish, hydrate and protect.

loreal conditionerTIP #2  DEEP CONDITION

Conditioning is a must.  The more quenched your hair is, the longer your styles last and stay frizz-free.   For best results, look for conditioners that contain natural oils because they are absorbed more easily by your hair’s outer cuticle layer.  Also look for conditioners that contain protein.  A protein conditioner will manage frizz and create shine.
Liss Unlimited Keratin Oil Complex Conditioner is one of our salon products that we recommend specifically for unruly hair.  It contains a pro-keratin complex of amino acids and wheat protein that mimic your hair’s natural keratin structure.  It also has Kukui Oil and Evening Primrose Oil to control frizz and keep your hair smooth.

Aside from normal conditioning, a once-a-week deep conditioning treatment or hair mask can also help your hair stay smooth.   Anything that is oil-infused works wonders.   A great option is L’Oreal’s Keratin Oil Complex Masque (also available at the salon).  It’s a smoothing mask that bathes your hair in hydration, polishes its surface and provides humidity protection.  It’s also a great shine enhancer.   Just like other Liss Unlimited products, it uses a pro-keratin blend of amino acids and wheat protein, along with  Kukui Oil and Evening Primrose Oil.   To treat your hair to a little at-home spa time, apply the masque to wet hair, wrap in a towel and leave on for 30 minutes.  Then rinse, air dry, and savor your amazingly smooth and shiny strands.

loreal liss unlimited conditioning masqueTIP #3   DON’T OVERWASH

Shampooing on a daily basis is another habit that can contribute to frizz, particularly if you have hair that is chemically altered, fine, damaged, color-treated, highlighted, naturally curly, or coarse.  Frequent shampooing can dehydrate your hair and remove natural oils which keep your hair’s cuticle smooth and protected against moisture loss.

Start washing your hair every other day (or less often if you have very dry, curly or coarse hair).   If your hair gets oily at the scalp between shampoos, apply a dry shampoo like L’Oreal Fresh Dust at the roots.  Fresh Dust is an invisible, talc-free product with micronized minerals that will absorb excess oil and odor, and leave your hair with a nice refreshing fragrance.

TIP #4   TOSS YOUR OLD TOWEL FOR A NEW MICRO FIBER ONE

One thing that you never want to do is to scrub your head relentlessly with a towel right after you step out of the shower.  Your hair is delicate, and all of that vigorous rubbing just roughs up the surface and causes friction.
Instead of using a normal bath towel, try a super soft microfiber towel, and gently blot your hair to remove the excess water.  Then air dry or use a diffuser with cool air.

TIP #5   BANISH THE HEAT TOOLS

Since heat is one of the worst offenders when it comes to frizz and cuticle damage, it’s important to limit the use of irons, dryers, and other hot tools when you’re styling.  As often as you can, skip blow drying altogether and let your hair air dry.

When you must use the dryer, try one of these strategies to keep frizz down to a minimum:
•    Air-dry your hair almost completely and use the blow-dryer just to finish the look, when it’s already 90% dry.
•    OR use the cool air setting on the dryer along with a diffuser.
•    OR apply a thermal protectant cream or serum like L’Oreal Blow Dry Cream.  Then dry your hair partially with warm (not hot) air, and roll it onto Velcro rollers.  Let it cool, set, and finish air drying on the rollers.  When you remove the rollers, you’ll have frizz free hair with lots of volume.

For best results, choose an ionic ceramic blow dryer.  Ionic dryers reduce frizz by compressing the cuticle, which locks out external moisture.

TIP #6  SLEEP ON SILK AND SATIN

Not only is it just incredibly luxurious to sleep on a satin or silk pillow case, it’s also a great way to protect your hair from becoming frizzy overnight, particularly if it’s really curly.   Cotton pillow cases can be rough and can create friction as your hair rubs against them while you sleep.  Silk and satin give your hair a friction-free surface instead.

TIP #7  GO ALCOHOL FREE

Look for alcohol-free styling products.  Alcohol can dry hair out, and dry hair is the precursor to frizz and unruly tresses.   Read labels carefully, and avoid anything alcohol related.

TIP #8  USE A LEAVE IN PRODUCT

Styling creams and smoothing serums are great frizz-fighters because they are specifically designed to create a barrier between your hair and external elements.   (This is especially important for girls with curly or coarse hair.  The curlier your hair, the more product you’ll need.)  If you don’t already have a favorite, try Liss Unlimited Smoothing Dual Serum.  It is a great leave in product that protects your hair from frizz and humidity while smoothing every strand for a perfect finish.   Work it through damp strands from roots to ends using your fingers, and then let your hair dry.  If your hair gets a little unruly during the day, you can rub a small amount of the serum between your palms and then smooth over any trouble spots.

TIP #9  DON’T BRUSH WHEN DRY

The best time to brush and detangle is in the shower while conditioner is still on your hair.  (Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush with flexible, widely spaced, rounded-tip bristles to comb out all the tangles.)   Try to avoid brushing your hair after it has dried.  Brushing dry hair causes friction that can damage the cuticle layer, and it creates a fuzzy, puffy style.  Dry hair is also less flexible than wet hair, so brushing it when it’s dry can cause breakage and stress.

TIP # 10  AVOID OVER PROCESSING

Relaxers, straighteners, high lift lightening, perms, and other chemical services can damage the outer layer of your hair and leave it rough, dry, frizzy and ragged.  Try to limit chemical services that can add stress to your hair, and pamper your locks as often as possible with products that will nourish, strengthen, repair and hydrate.

There is no one, perfect, frizz control product or solution, but a combining the habits above along with a few changes to your styling routine can make a true, recognizable difference over time.   The stylists at our hair salon in Vero Beach FL are also happy to help with additional tips for your specific hair situation.   Stop by the salon and visit us soon!

How To Super Charge Your Hair

Posted:
loreal pro fiber

Every woman is entitled to hair that looks amazing with incredible shine, strength, and softness.  Our indulgent Pro Fiber treatment does just that.  It pampers your hair in the same way that a luxurious spa manicure cares for your hands for extraordinary smooth softness.   Whether your hair is just a little dry & rough or a full scale, four alarm hot mess, Pro Fiber makes it possible to enjoy 6 weeks of long-lasting damage repair and super hero conditioning.

Why is our treatment better than what other hair salons offer?

Dull dry hair, ragged split ends, faded color and rough brittle texture are all symptoms of fiber damage.   As a solution, most hair salons offer deep conditioning treatments that make your hair feel soft and silky.  That is, until your next shampoo.  Then, all that wonderful soft silkiness goes down the drain, and your hair returns to its old, dry, dull condition.

Not so with our Pro Fiber treatment.  It’s an innovation in hair repair that includes Aptyl 100.  Developed after 15 years of research by L'Oréal laboratories, Aptyl 100 uses a first-ever technology that is able to repair hair fiber with long-lasting results.   With Aptyl 100 and our Pro Fiber system, your hair gets MORE than just a temporary 24 hour fix.   Our 3 step system includes:  1) an in salon treatment that instantly regenerates your hair,  2) at-home reactivation treatments,  and 3) extended damage control that lasts up to 6 weeks by using a Re-charge product.

STEP ONE:  EXCLUSIVE SALON SERVICE

deep conditioning treatment at hair salonOne of our stylists will analyze your hair’s thickness and damage and then prescribe an exclusive, in salon, customized therapy.   Using a layering technique, we’ll apply Regenerate Long-lasting Care Activator, our extraordinary Aptyl 100 molecular complex.  It instantly repairs every strand and leaves your hair soft and intensely shiny.   With three ranges designed for different levels of thickness and sensitivity, you can walk out of the salon with luminous and healthy-looking hair no matter what your hair’s texture and level of damage.

STEP TWO:  AT HOME REACTIVATION

The benefits continue after your salon service.  With our Pro Fiber line of hair care you can strengthen your hair every week at home.  The at-home Pro Fiber routine prolongs the effects of the Aptyl 100 molecular complex on the hair fiber. During each shampoo, the treatment is reactivated.

STEP THREE:  RE-CHARGE BOOSTER

A Re-charge booster is also available that can be used every four shampoos as a substitute to your conditioner or masque in order to recharge the salon resurfacing effect yourself at home.  The Re-charge booster uses Aptyl 100 to continue fortifying every fiber from within and instantly resurfaces every strand for soft and smooth hair.   After every 4th shampoo, use Re-Charge in place of your usual Pro Fiber conditioner or masque to prolong the in salon treatment results for up to 6 weeks.

7 Hair Tips That Can Make You Look Younger

Posted:
Is your hair making you look older than you really are?  A few simple changes can take years off your appearance.    Read our tips below to learn how!

short blonde bob hair style#1   ADD BANGS

If you’re getting older, one quick and easy trick that can give you a more youthful appearance is to have your stylist add bangs…not the severe straight across kind, mind you, but long stylish side-swept fringe.  Side swept bangs are versatile and they complement many different face shapes.  They have a softening effect and they can also hide lines on your forehead in a very charming way.   Make sure that you stay away from bangs that are too wispy, though, as thin bangs run the risk of making your hair look straggly instead of chic.

#2   ADD HIGHLIGHTS or LIGHTEN YOUR COLOR A NOTCH

If your hair color is too dark, it can make your face appear harsh, accenting lines, dark circles and creases that you may not want to draw attention to.   Warming up your natural hair color a bit can have a softening and lightening effect which can make you look younger.   So can adding a few lighter colored strands around your face.

A fabulous way to get beautiful face-framing highlights is with balayage.  The balayage technique can soften and lighten your hair exactly where you need it.  And, unlike foil highlights, balayage highlights are low-maintenance.  They’re applied with a special process that is designed to mimic the natural highlights you’d get from the sun  so they’ll grow out nicely without leaving roots that need to be retouched.

If you opt for highlights at our salon, ask us about Olaplex.   It’s a revolutionary treatment that we use in conjunction with our hair lightening services.  It helps to repair and link broken bonds in your hair, adds softness and shine, and helps to control frizz.  You can learn more about it HERE

#3   CAMOUFLAGE  YOUR GRAY

Some women embrace their gray.  Others (especially those who are pre-maturely gray) just want it to go away.  Far, far away.  If you fall into the second category, you have lots of options.    If you’re seeing just a few stray gray hairs, you can tint them with hair powders and coloring sticks that are available at most beauty supply stores.   Another option is to use a colored mascara or a  powdered eyeshadow with a brush to blend and camouflage random gray strands to match your natural color.

If you have a higher percentage of gray or white, you can make it all go away and take years off your appearance with a color service at the salon.   Our L’Oreal collection offers many choices from permanent hair color to low-maintenance, demi-permanent formulas like DIA Light and DIA Richesse.  These demi-permanent options cover gray beautifully, and the color will gradually fade over time so you’ll not end up with that tell-tale line near your roots as your hair grows.  The formulas can be customized to give you the exact shade that you’re looking for with rich tones, incredible shine, and NO smelly ammonia in the process.

layered bob lob hair salon style#4   THINK SOFT NOT RIGID

Wearing looser hair styles can also make you look younger.   Slicked back hair and tight buns look school marm-ish and severe.   Styles that look too fussed over can give you a matronly air.   Less structured styles, loose waves, gentle curls, and soft silhouettes are the way to go.  A tousled long bob (lob) or wavy chin-length bob with a side part can make you appear younger and can frame your face in a more flattering way.

#5   GO EASY ON THE STYLING PRODUCTS

Wearing stiff styles that are plastered with too much hair spray is a mistake that many women make.   Not only does it create an aged look, but all that product is really not healthy for your hair.   Try one of the L’Oreal Professionnel  flexible hold sprays that we use at the salon.  They’ll give you just the right amount of hold to keep your hair in place while still allowing your hair to move and breathe.

#6   CHOOSE THE RIGHT HAIR LENGTH

Contrary to the ever popular myth, you don’t have to cut off all of your hair as you get older.  While hair down to the waist does become less flattering as you age, there’s no need to adopt a super short cropped style if that’s not the real you.   If you love the pixie cut and it complements your face shape, then go for it!  But if your heart sinks at the thought of losing all of your length, then ask one of the stylists at our salon for a long-layered haircut and style that falls right at the collar bone.  This length is very flattering and youthful, and it’s long enough to wear in a twist or ponytail, tousled or straight, with lots of versatility.

#7   PAMPER YOUR HAIR

One of the best things that you can do for a youthful appearance is to keep your hair healthy.  As you age, your hair loses a lot of its volume, strength, and elasticity.  The texture often changes, too.   Add the stress of bleaching, heat styling, sun exposure and too-frequent shampoos and you’re left with a head of hair that is brittle, porous, frizzy, and dry.   Dry, damaged hair is a styling nightmare, and it can make you look older than you really are.

fiberceutic hair salon treatment for damaged hairBy starting a healthy care regimen, you can give your hair back some of its youthful bounce and luster.  Begin with a visit to the salon to trim away all those damaged, split ends.   Then let one of our stylists pamper your hair with a Fiberceutic treatment.   There’s a reason why we call this treatment “botox for hair”.  It has a patented Intra-Cylane technology that molds itself to your hair’s inner cortex to add body and strength.  It transforms extremely weak, damaged strands from the inside out, reconstructing and protecting  it.

Once the damage has been repaired with your salon treatment, follow these steps to keep your hair looking young and healthy in the weeks ahead:
Wear a hat or scarf when outdoors to protect your hair from UV rays.  Just as the sun can damage your skin, it can also damage, age, and weaken your hair.   If you’re not a hat or scarf person, look for a conditioner that offers UV protection instead.  (We’ve got several products at the salon that offer great UV protection.  Ask one of our stylists at your next visit. )
Shampoo less.  Shampooing too often can strip your hair of the natural oils that it needs to stay supple, young-looking, and healthy.  If you’re a daily shampooer, switch to every other day or less often, and use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.  Protein enriched products are also great for damaged hair.  On your no-shampoo days, use a dry shampoo (applied at the roots of your dry hair) to freshen up your style.
Skip heat styling as much as possible.  Blow dryers and heat styling tools are notorious for causing severe damage to the outer cuticle of your hair.  This leads to breakage, split ends, loss of shine and the fried hair look.    As often as you can, let your hair air dry.  Use heat free options such as Velcro rollers or Curlformers to get volume and curl.   And always, always, always use a heat protectant spray or serum on your hair before using a dryer or iron.
loreal mythic oil masque maskOnce a week use a conditioning treatment with natural oils, such as L'Oréal Mythic Oil Masque.   Just a tablespoon amount is all it takes to replenish dull, dry, damaged, and/or chemically treated hair.  Mythic Oil is paraben free and contains a blend of argan, avocado, cottonseed and grape seed oils.  It leaves your hair feeling intensely nourished, glossy, soft to the touch, and manageable.
Lastly, eat healthy, drink plenty of water, and take a biotin supplement.  Biotin is a B vitamin that helps grow strong, healthy hair and nails.  In just a few months, you’ll see a noticeable difference.

10 Little Hair Secrets Every Woman Should Know

Posted:

Sometimes the only thing standing between a good hair day and a great hair day is the right technique. Check out our best salon secrets for getting amazing style!

#1  Pin like a pro.

Styles like messy buns and twists need the help of a bobby pin or two to stay in place.  If you’ve ever used a bobby pin, though, you know it’s tricky to get them to stay put without sliding right back out.  That can be frustrating if you’re right in the middle of an amazing  updo.  How do stylists at salons do it?
Here’s the secret:  If you take a look at a bobby pin, you’ll see that one side is bumpy and the other is straight.  The bumpy side should always be the side that faces your scalp.  That keeps the pin from sliding out as easily.  You can also bend the straight side of the bobby pin in half so that it makes a V shape.  Then, when you insert the pin into a bun or twist, the bent V end will catch on your hair, keeping the pin in place and preventing it from sliding out.   How cool is that?

#2  Use dry shampoo for styling magic.

L'Oreal Dry ShampooDry shampoo is so much more than just dry shampoo.  Yes, it’s awesome for those days when you’re giving your hair a break from the normal washing & drying routine (or when you’ve accidentally over slept and you are limited on time for getting ready in the morning!)  But----it is also a nice little styling product.

Dry shampoo can be used to give your hair grip and volume.   That extra grip comes in handy when you’re creating a French twist or when you want your ponytails and braids to stay neat and tidy.   It’s also helpful when you want a fairly voluminous look and you’re running low on mousse.

Just apply a bit of dry shampoo to your roots immediately after you shampoo and dry.  Your hair will get instant volume along with the perfect texture for an updo, plus the product will also soak up oil and debris from your hair as the day goes on.

#3  Smooth static and flyaways.

Pesky static and flyaways can be exasperating, but it’s easy to make them disappear.   Just spray a little hairspray onto a brush and then smooth it through your hair.  You’ll get instant shine and those flyaways will be a thing of the past.

#4  Detangle in the shower.

When is the best time to detangle your hair?  In the shower!  Before you rinse out conditioner, use a vent brush or a wide tooth comb to gently brush your hair from root to tip. This will get rid of tangles without damaging your hair.
Never try to detangle your hair with a brush when it’s dry.  This just causes friction, contributes to frizz, and can cause serious breakage and damage.

velcro rollers for hair salon blowout style#5  Use Velcro rollers for an amazing blowout.

If you’ve got a set of Velcro rollers, then you can create a great blowout in under 30 minutes.  This is perfect for when you can’t make it into the salon for a professional blowout, and for those crazy days when you’re running late and don’t have enough time to go through the entire shampoo, blow dry and style routine.

To get the look----wrap 2 inch sections of dry hair around large Velcro rollers.  Then give each roller a shot of warm air from a blow dryer.  Mist lightly with hairspray (we recommend one of the lightweight L’Oreal finishing sprays that we use at the salon) and then let the rollers cool down for about 20 minutes while you’re doing your makeup.  When you take the rollers out, you’ll have a gorgeous blowout with great volume at the roots and bend at the ends.

**Another fabulous tip:  Velcro rollers also work really well for setting curls when you are using a curling iron.  As soon as you release curls from the iron, wrap each one around a large Velcro roller and secure it.  Then let your hair cool for about 20 minutes and mist with a finishing spray.  This “set and cool” time will give you long lasting curls that won’t fall flat.

salon blow dry#6  Use cool air for shine.

The cool air setting on your dryer can be used to give your hair a smooth finish.  When you’re almost done drying, switch to the cool setting and blow dry for one minute to set your style and give it shine.   Another option is to set your hair in Velcro rollers immediately after blow-drying.  Let your hair cool in the Velcro rollers for a smooth finish.

Helpful tip:  When blow drying, point the nozzle of the dryer toward the ends of your hair. This directs the stream of air in the same direction that your hair grows, so it smooths the cuticle and prevents tangles.

#7 Give up daily shampoos.

Daily shampooing is actually not healthy for your hair.  Washing your hair every day robs your hair of moisture and natural oils, and that can lead to dry, dull, fragile hair.   Frequent washing can also make your hair color and highlights fade twice as fast.  No one wants faded color or dry, dehydrated hair.  Begin washing your hair every other day (or less often based on your hair type), and your hair will stay healthy, shiny, and more manageable.

On your “no shampoo days”, try using a product such as L’Oreal Fresh Dust Dry Shampoo.   When applied to your hair and roots, the dry shampoo will absorb excess oil and leave your hair with an amazing fragrance.   You’ll get hair that feels clean, shiny, and refreshed without being subjected to unnecessary washing.

#8  Sleep on a satin pillow case.
If your hair is especially delicate or fine, try sleeping on a satin pillowcase.  Satin won't snag your hair or cause friction like cotton, which can rough up the outer layer of your hair.  It’s the perfect choice for fine hair, extensions, natural hair, curls, and other hair types that need a little extra tender loving care to stay smooth and healthy.

#9  Give your hair a mid-day volume boost.
Hair styles often experience a mid-day slump.  To give your strands a quick refresh, flip your hair upside down and mist with hair spray in the middle of the day when your style starts to look droopy.  Then flip right side up again and lightly fluff.   Voila!  Instant  lift to make it through the rest of the day!

#10  Don’t style in a steamy bathroom.

It’s a mistake that many of us make all too often---we step out of a steamy shower, towel dry, and then reach for the blow dryer to start blasting our hair.  It’s like trying to style in the middle of a rainforest with that much moisture, humidity, and steam still in the air.
For best results, wait until the bathroom cools off or move to another room to style.  Waiting about 10 minutes to blow dry and style gives your hair a chance to air dry a bit and allows time for a heat protectant to soak into your strands.  It also keeps you from breaking into a sweat as you blow dry.

How To Curl Your Hair Like A Pro

Posted:
salon curling iron

We are absolutely in love with curls and waves this year.  If your hair leans toward the wavy and curly side, lucky you!  You can get some of this year’s most adored hair styles with practically no effort at all.   If your hair is not naturally curly, though, it’s simply a matter of choosing the right curling iron and technique to get those gorgeous spirals, ringlets and beachy waves.
How do the pros do it?  Find out with our tips below.

#1:  START WITH A PROTECTIVE PRIMER

loreal mythic oilBefore you begin curling, apply a heat protectant to your hair to shield it from damage.  Heat destroys vital proteins and depletes the natural oils in your hair.  A heat-protectant will help replenish moisture and defend against frying.  L’Oreal Mythic Oil Sève Protectrice Oil-in-Cream Primer is a favorite at our hair salon, and it works really well for this purpose.  It contains Black Cumin Oil, which coats your strands in a nourishing and protective layer and provides heat protection up to 446°F during styling.

You just apply a small amount of the product to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair after towel drying, detangle and comb through for even distribution.  Then wait for about 10 minutes until the product is absorbed, and you’re good to go with blow drying and styling.

#2:  NEVER USE AN IRON ON WET HAIR

A sizzle is a sound that you never want to hear when an iron touches your hair.  Never use a curling wand on wet or even slightly damp hair.  Make sure every strand is completely dry before heat is applied.   The outer layer of your hair cuticle can suffer severe damage otherwise.

#3:  CHOOSE THE RIGHT TOOL

Ideally, you should use an iron that has different temperature settings as well as a barrel made of either ceramic or tourmaline.  Ceramic irons allow for even flow of heat while tourmaline irons help to control frizz by using negative ionic charges that seal the outer cuticle of the hair.

The temperature control can be set based on your hair type.  If you have delicate, damaged, fine, or color-treated hair, choose a low heat setting (about 200 degrees).  If your hair is super thick or has a coarse texture, a higher temperature of between 250 - 300 degrees should work.  Never go above 400 degrees or you could damage your hair.

curling iron styling at the hair salon
#4:  DIVIDE AND CONQUER

While your iron or wand is heating up, divide and clip your dry hair into manageable sections.  Then, work from the bottom up, curling the lower sections near your neck before moving upward.  Start with a small one inch section and wind it around the barrel of the iron.  Hold for up to 20 seconds depending upon the thickness and texture of your hair.  (Thinner and more delicate hair will require less time to curl than thicker, coarse texture hair).

Make sure you are not curling too much at a time.  You won’t get an even distribution of heat if you try to curl a huge chunky section all at once, and your curls will end up falling apart.
For a more natural look, try curling your hair away from your face.  That means winding the hair down and around the barrel of the iron in a clockwise direction on the right side of your head and a counter-clockwise direction on the left side.

#5:  COOL TO SET

velcro rollersOnce you’ve released a curl from the iron, it needs time to cool in order to set.  Many of us make the mistake of touching or running our fingers through our curls immediately.  This can make all those lovely waves and ringlets instantly go flat.  For the best, longest lasting style, wrap each curl on a Velcro roller as soon as it is released from the barrel of your curling iron. This works well if you're going for a high volume look. Another method is to roll the curl back up on your fingers and secure with a clip. (You can place a small amount of tissue paper between the clip and your hair to keep the clip from leaving a crease or mark.)
Let your hair cool in the Velcro rollers or clips for about 30 minutes or until completely set.  Then mist with a finishing spray.  (The L’Oreal finishing sprays that we use at the salon are an excellent option as they provide flexible hold that will allow your curls to move without being rigid.)  Use your fingers to gently separate the curls into your desired style. You can also lightly brush them for a smoother wave.   Voila!  Perfection!

2015 Fall Hair Trends

copper red hair color salon trend for 2015

After a long summer of sand, sultry sun and soaring heat, we’re excited that fall is just around the corner.   Not only because it means that the temperatures will be a little cooler, but also because of the trends that we’re seeing on the Fall 2015 fashion runways this year.   The catwalks are full of inspiring ideas guaranteed to give your hair that little extra something it needs to be simply swoon-worthy.

FAVORITE HAIR COLOR TRENDS FOR FALL 2015

BRONDE
There’s a reason why everyone is SO in love with this hair color trend.   It’s the perfect melding of blonde and brunette in a way that looks effortlessly natural and breathtaking.   To get the effect, you simply add highlights (or lowlights) in two or more color nuances that are very close to your starting hair color.  Brunettes can become brondes by adding slightly lighter ribbons of buttery blonde or caramel color around the hair line and ends.  Blondes can get the look by adding strands of cappuccino brown and slightly darker blonde tones.  The key is to have a lot of your natural color showing through and to have your highlights applied in a way that looks sun-drenched and realistic….as if the sun had naturally lightened the strands over time.

If you’re a little color shy or if you want a low-maintenance color option that fades beautifully and doesn’t require you to be at the hair salon all the time, this is it.  With bronde highlights, you won’t end up with roots that need to be retouched as your hair grows.

COPPER & METALLIC
This London-born color technique started earlier in the year, and it’s another favorite hair color trend for Fall 2015.   The metallic effect is created by having two complementary colors placed along your hair strands with a very gradual transition between the two, as one color subtly melts into the other.   For warm skin tones, the combination of muted auburns and bright coppers is the perfect pairing, especially when you add a gloss treatment on top of the color for a radiant  glow.  The result is absolutely stunning color that has the luster and shine of polished metal.   Think Bella Thorne, Emma Stone, and Julianne Moore.
Based on your skin tone, different hues can be used to brighten up your hair ranging from bronze, gold, strawberry or russet red, copper, and titanium brown.

CHOCOLATE, LATTE  AND CARAMEL
Latte, caramel, and rich chocolate—they’re not only sinfully delicious, they’re also some of this season’s most popular highlight colors for brunettes.   If you’ve got darker hair, you can add warmth, depth and dimension to your style with subtle, facing framing highlights in colors such as caramel, café au lait, or light cocoa.   Your hair will look positively decadent.

FAVORITE HAIR STYLE TRENDS FOR FALL 2015

THE LOB
The ultra-flattering long bob or “lob” is set to be the most popular haircut of 2015, and a number of high profile stars have already adopted this style.   If you’ve got long hair, the lob is a great way to keep some of the length that you love while adding some texture and movement.   It’s also a fairly low-maintenance look.  For styling, you just apply a L’Oreal Tecni.ART styling product on towel-dried hair and blow-dry using a vent brush to create soft texture and movement.  Then apply an additional texture product to the mid-lengths and ends and blow-dry with fingers, or diffuse for soft texture.  Easy as pie.

LOW PONYTAILS
Worn sleek or messy, to the side or wrapped in metal, you just can’t beat the ponytail.  It is super versatile and a favorite look of models flaunting the fall runway collections of designers like Michael Kors and Dior.   The common thread of almost all ponytail styles this year is that they are typically worn low (either at the neck or past) rather than high.

THE PIXIE
If you have small or fine features, the pixie cut is the perfect complement to the delicate features of your face.   With a few styling products from the salon and a flat iron, you can take a pixie from angelic to edgy in just a matter of minutes.  You can also get completely different looks by varying the style of bangs….from side-swept to choppy.

THE TWIST
Bid farewell to the bun, and say hello to the twist.   This year, messy twists are in.  Gather your hair into a loose knot or twist at the nape of your neck for an unfussy look that works beautifully with relaxed Boho styles.   You can secure it with a statement piece pin, thick ribbon, or just leave it simple and half undone.  Think Vera Wang.

BEST ACCESSORIES
Fall’s favorite accessories all nod their head toward leather.   There’s a great mix of leather headbands and wrappings for ponytails in the fall collections of Honor, Derek Lam, Fendi and Tanya Taylor.  And if you’re not a lover of leather, then bobby pins and gold clips are also hot this season and a great way to perk up your ‘do with a little glam.
