Air-Dried Waves Made Simple

Three easy steps are all it takes!

When the weather is still warm, the last thing you want to do is sit inside and blow-dry your hair. Give your blow-dryer a break and embrace air-dried waves. Celebrities and tastemakers alike have embraced heat-free, natural-looking waves with open arms, and you can too! Aside from being a total breeze to achieve (little-to-no styling is needed!), the look is also a step in the right direction to dial down on applying direct heat to your mane. Ready to give the trend a try? Read on for expert tips on how to achieve naturally air-dried waves.

Get the look:

Step one: After washing your hair, pre-dry your strands with a towel and then part it with your fingers. Towel-drying can make your hair a bit knotty, so lightly combing it through once is OK, but you don't want to overdo it. You want to be sure to keep your hair's natural movement intact while avoiding frizz.

Step two: Next, spray L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Wild Stylers Beach Waves onto your lengths. Squeeze and sculpt the hair with your hands to deliver movement and texture. For ropy waves, clip your hair into small twists and leave it to air dry.

Step three: For a disheveled look, finish off your style with a few spritzes of L'Oréal Professionnel Wild Stylers Next Day Hair. For a polished finish, work a serum or hair oil into your ends and lengths.

That's it! You're just three steps away from achieving this low effort, high reward style.

Beauty Sleep: The Ultimate Nighttime Hair Routine

Wake Up To Beautiful Hair!
Let's face it: We've all dealt with our fair share of unwanted static, creases, and all-around messiness. Upon waking, it's all about ensuring hair looks presentable enough to be out in public, a process which can be time-consuming to say the least. But what if we told you that with a little prep prior to shut-eye, you can skip all that time dealing with tangles and knots and spend more time perfecting your style? Expert hairdresser, and L'Oreal Professionnel Artist, Jill Engelsen shares her top tips on how to care for your mane at night so you can wake up to gorgeous-looking hair AND a more streamlined morning routine. Win-win!

ON HER GO-TO NIGHTTIME HAIR CARE PRODUCTS:

"The evening is a great time to do an overnight mask for your hair," Engelsen says. "These products can replenish the moisture and add any reparative properties that the hair needs." Engelsen has a soft spot for L'Oreal Professionnel Absolute Repair Lipidium. For a superlight night serum, try our new L'Oreal Professionnel Inforcer Night Anti-Breakage Serum that detangles, protects and strengthens overnight.

ON HOW TO TIE BACK LONG STRANDS:

There's no denying that sleeping with hair that's down can lead to quite the knotty mess upon waking, especially if the strands are long. Tie them back so they're out of your way, but do it right! "If you have long hair, I recommend twisting the hair up into a loose topknot and securing it with a fabric-covered elastic," Engelsen says. "This technique gives the hair volume in the AM and protects curls and professional blowouts." If your hair is long due to extensions, Engelsen recommends pulling your hair back into a low braided ponytail.

ON HOW TO DIAL DOWN ON VOLUME:

Don't want to wake up to a voluminous mane? No problem. "If you want to decrease the volume, wrap your hair flat to your head and tie it with a silk scarf," Engelsen says.

ON WHETHER PILLOWCASES MATTER:

There's long been a debate about whether or not the pillowcase you rest your head on makes a difference not just for your skin but for your hair as well. As far as your mane goes, Engelsen is a satin pillowcase devotee. "I recommend every client invest in a satin pillowcase which allows the hair to slip smoothly across it," she says. "A common pillowcase can catch the hair in certain places, allowing for kinks and indents."

ON BRUSHING HAIR BEFORE BED:

To brush or not to brush? That is the question. "I personally don't brush my hair very often," Engelsen says. "I like the natural beachy texture it has when I wake up." (In case you're wondering, Engelman has long and wavy hair.) If you're looking for a smoother finish in the a.m., use L'Oreal Professionnel Inforcer Brush Proof. Spray directly on the brush and then brush through hair for detangled and smoother hair.

Enjoy More Voluminous Hair!

maximum volume with minimal effort
One of the biggest hair-related complaints out there is lack of volume, and it's easy to understand why. Why settle for a thin, lackluster mane when you can have big, hair flip-worthy locks instead? The good news is that giving your strands a volume boost isn't impossible. Whether you were born with naturally thin hair or have smooth hair that lies flat, there's a solution (or two, or three!) out there for you. Ready to cheat your way to more voluminous hair? Below, we're sharing expert volume-building tips and tricks that can help you fake fuller hair.

1. Try a Layered Cut

To help give your hair the appearance of more volume, rely on layering. During your next haircut appointment, ask your James Geidner stylist to cut layers into your lengths. This simple technique can reduce some of the weight of your hair and bring forth the volume you desire.

2. Embrace a New Haircolor

Did you know our color artists can help you create the illusion of voluminous hair with hair color techniques? It's true! Certain hair color techniques incorporate tonality and depth and can create the effect of a volume-rich mane. Talk to us about which technique would best suit your hair. We could choose to create light and shadow throughout your hair with balayage or incorporate highlights on the front of your hair to add texture and dimension. Our skilled colorists will know the best technique to use that will give the impression of more volume.

3. Be Choosy with Products

It's no secret that one of the fastest ways to achieve a voluminous mane is with volumizing hair care and styling products. From volumizing shampoos to thickening mousses, there's no shortage of options out there to choose from. Scan product labels and reach for products formulated to add volume to the hair. Start by using a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Prior to styling, apply a volumizing mousse, like L'Oreal Professionnel Volume Envy Extra, to towel-dried hair. To lift at the root, reach for L'Oreal Professionnel Densité, a thickening primer that can provide hair with density and fullness. Just be careful not to overdo it, since applying too many products at once can weigh your hair down and create the opposite effect.

4. Switch Up Your Styles

When styling your hair, opt for hairstyles that add extra oomph to flat, lifeless strands. Try a bun with volumized roots or a half-up half-down look with backcombed roots. Not only are these styles day-and-night appropriate, they will easily make your mane the center of attention!

Top tip: After styling, spritz your hair with some hairspray, like L'Oreal Professionnel Infinium 4. In addition to helping lock your style in place and taming flyaways, hairspray can provide a bit of texture and lift-making the hair feel thicker without being sticky.

5. Tease Your Hair

Teasing (or backcombing) your hair gives instant volume to any length of hair. Start by taking a small section of hair and using a comb to backcomb toward the roots. Remove the comb and repeat until desired height is achieved. If you're not sure how to tease the right way, it's best to ask us during your next appointment rather than risk damaging your hair.
