FAQs

What type of hair is used for hair extensions?

The main types of human hair available are European, Indian and Asian hair.  The best quality hair extensions are made from 100% natural Remy human hair.   The difference between Remy hair extensions and other types of hair extensions is that Remy hair extensions are crafted from hair with the cuticle facing in all one direction.  Inferior quality hair extensions are created from brushed hair that has been gathered in large quantities with the hair cuticles facing in two different directions.  When this occurs, matting and tangling is inevitably the result.  Some companies attempt to remove the cuticle by using a chemical treatment.  This process however results in destroying the hair structure and creating very fragile hair.  To combat the damage, a silicone layer is sometimes applied to the hair extensions to add shine and body that were removed during the chemical treatment.  This outer coating can have a very short life.

It is difficult to tell the difference in hair extension quality.  At Hair Extensions Santa Barbara, we use only top quality 100% Remy human hair in order to provide our clients with the very best hair extensions possible.

How do I care for my extensions?

The best choice for shampoos, conditioners, and styling products are those that add moisture back into the hair and do not contain sulfates.  Products for oily hair or strippers that take out chlorine or product build up should not be used as they will leave the hair dry.  Use styling products that are zero or low alcohol. Products for dry hair are the best choice for hair extensions. Spray in conditioners are wonderful for the ends.

When shampooing your hair, wash the hair in one direction from top to bottom. Avoid washing hair upside down. Wash hair right after swimming. When brushing your hair, start from the bottom and work your way up while holding the top.

Will it be obvious that I am wearing hair extensions?

When properly applied, no one should be able to tell that you are wearing hair extensions. Your hair extensions will blend with your natural hair.  We will assist you in choosing the right color and curl pattern so that your extensions will be virtually undetectable.

Can my extensions be permed or color treated?

Yes, hair extensions can be permed or colored just like normal hair.  However, If you do decide to perm or color your hair extensions, it is best to use a semi- permanent color or color conditioner and not peroxide in order to preserve the life and beauty of your hair.

How long does it take to get hair extensions?

Generally, the process can take between several hours up to a full day depending upon the type and the amount of extensions that will be added to your hair.

How often do I need to maintain my hair extensions?

Typically, every 6 to 8 weeks is the average length of time between appointments for maintenance.

Can I brush, blow dry and style my hair extensions?

Your extensions can be brushed, curled, and styled just like your normal hair.  When brushing, be careful, and if you have a tangle, hold the hair while you brush it. We suggest letting hair air dry and using a wide tooth comb to detangle.  Hair will dry out sooner if blow dryers, flat irons, and other heat styling tools are used.

Will applying hair extensions damage my natural hair?

If correctly applied and properly maintained and cared for, hair extensions should not damage your natural hair.   It is very important to choose wisely when selecting a salon to install your extensions.  At Hair Extensions Santa Barbara, our 20 years of experience in the hair industry specializing in hair extensions gives us an advantage over less experienced stylists.   We can make recommendations about which options are the best option for you at your consultation.
