Painless Solutions to Hair Loss

Posted:
Do not despair if you are shedding and losing hair. Fine and thinning hair is a huge issue for many women and men. The problem is frequently related to hormones and is manageable.

There are painless solutions to your hair loss in many cases. As long as you are
not ‘slick as an onion’, with any hair follicle ‘fuzz’, hair regrowth is possible.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

DHT is caused by many factors. Most of the time it is a hormonal imbalance of androgen, estrogen and testosterone. Levels that are in normal range are not necessarily good enough if the balance between these three hormones is out of sync.

Causes of hormonal imbalance include:  hyperthyroid, hypothyroid, anesthesia, strong anti-depressants, blood pressure medications, poor diet lack of vitamins D and E, high stress levels, menopause, hysterectomy, and rapid weight loss. Other causes are also possible.

Hair loss is controlled by the use of vascular dilators and DHT inhibitors that work subcutaneously by being applied once or twice daily, depending on the product. Both vascular dilators and DHT inhibitors are necessary to get optimal results.

Scalp conditions also play into hair loss. Proper shampoos and conditioners are very important. Oily scalp and hair polymers in them build up and add to hair loss.

When we get hot we sweat and the oil glands start producing. Products used on the hair and scalp absorbs into the open pores and as the scalp cools down the pores close, trapping these products and blocking the pores.  Once the pore is blocked and remains blocked, the new hair will try five times to come through it.  The hair follicle then atrophies and dies.

Keep in mind this can take several months of the growth cycle of hair growth, beginning, growth, and shedding. The hair is constantly re-growing and shedding.

Note that shedding will increase temporarily when starting or stopping treatments.

The myth that DHT inhibitors are something that you have to stay on for life varies by the individual, depending on such things as stress and medications. If your stress level decreases and medications decrease, sometimes you can come off of DHT inhibitors. But keep in mind that when starting or stopping DHT inhibitors, you may experience excessing shedding.

Women’s Hair Loss

Mistakenly thought to be a strictly male disease, women actually make up forty percent of American hair loss sufferers. Hair loss in women can be absolutely devastating for the sufferer's self image and emotional well being. Unfortunately, society has forced women to suffer in silence. It is considered far more acceptable for men to go through the same hair loss process. Even more unfortunately, the medical community also treats the issue of women's hair loss as if it were nonexistent. Since hair loss doesn't appear to be life threatening, most physicians pay little attention to women's complaints about hair loss and essentially tell their patients that "it's no big deal", and that "you'll just have to live with it."

Of course what these physicians don't seem to realize is that the psychological damage caused by hair loss and feeling unattractive can be just as devastating as any serious disease, and in fact, can take an emotional toll that directly affects physical health.

Hair loss is women is a serious life altering condition that can no longer be ignored by the medical community and society as a whole.

Men’s Hair Loss

Androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness (MPB) is responsible for the vast majority of hair loss in men. While there are many possible reasons people lose their hair, including serious disease, reaction to certain medications, and in rare cases extremely stressful events, most hair loss in men can be blamed on heredity.

What male pattern baldness sufferers are actually inheriting are hair follicles with a genetic sensitivity to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hair follicles that are sensitive to DHT begin to miniaturize, shortening the lifespan of each hair follicle affected. Eventually, these affected follicles stop producing cosmetically acceptable hair.

Male pattern baldness is generally characterized with the onset of a receeding hairline and thinning crown. Hair in these areas including the temples and mid-anterior scalp appear to be the most sensitive to DHT. This pattern eventually progresses into more apparent baldness throughout the entire top of the scalp, leaving only a rim or "horseshoe" pattern of hair remaining in the more advanced stages of MPB. For some men even this remaining rim of hair can be affected by DHT.   –American Hair Loss Association
