How to get longer (stronger!) hair.

While bobs and lobs are still trending, many of us still desire longer lengths when it comes to our locks. While there are a lot of hair growing myths out there, only a few of them rank as fact and not fiction. To get you started on your path to longer hair, we share a few hair growth secrets below that can actually work!

Secret #1: Regular Trims

Although cutting the dead ends doesn't directly affect how fast your hair will grow at the roots, it does help in the length department. When you don't go for regular trims your hair is likely to split and break at the ends, causing it to look straggly, and thereby counteracting any inches you may have grown over the last few months. To play it safe, schedule a hair trim every 4-6 weeks. This will keep your ends split-free and help you to grow longer, healthier hair.

Secret #2: A Clean Canvas

Even though you may think that lathering up in the shower can cause your hair to shed, think again. Hair naturally sheds an average of 50-100 strands a day and often most of those stray hairs are lost in the shower. Failing to lather up in hopes of holding onto those strands longer can actually have the opposite effect. When left unwashed for prolonged periods of time, the buildup of oils, product, and debris on the scalp and hair can clog the follicles and lead to further hair loss. To keep your hair growing longer and stronger, keep your locks clean! If you worry that over-shampooing is drying out your hair, consider switching to a cleansing conditioner in between washes.

Secret #3: Find Your Zen

Did you know that stress is one of the leading causes of hair loss? As if feeling stressed out wasn't bad enough, this negative emotion can often have a negative effect on your locks-causing everything from shedding to drying, to even brittle strands. To help you grow longer, stronger hair, consider taking a moment each day to de-stress through either yoga or even just a nice long bath. One of our favorites? Give yourself an aromatherapy-infused, essential oil scalp massage once a week. This will help to boost circulation and can even help you grow longer hair!

Secret #4: Eat Well

The age-old adage is true; you are what you eat ... especially when we're talking about hair. Your locks need lots of vitamins and nutrients to grow long and strong. Cut out the processed foods and refined sugars in favor of seasonal fruits and vegetables high in nutritional content. Biotin-a B vitamin-is especially great for hair and can be found in everything from bananas to bok choy!

Secret #5: Hydration

Just as you want to eat healthy foods for healthy hair, you'll also want to ensure your locks are getting the hydration they need inside and out. Drink a healthy amount of water each day and follow a hydrating haircare routine to help strengthen your hair and prevent breakage and split ends.

5 Step Guide for Girls With Curls

Friend or foe? Some days it’s hard to tell with curls. They can be one of your most charming assets or one of your greatest aggravations. With their fabulous texture and volume, curls require a special touch to stay hydrated, defined, and frizz-free. Check out our helpful tips below.

Frizz Proof Your Locks

If you’ve got curly locks, you’re well acquainted with their tendency to frizz and poof into an out of control mess. NYC Stylist, Drew Schaefering says, "The key is to learn to control the curl, helping to keep it smooth." To do this, he recommends gently twisting damp hair (after showering) into curls with your fingers using a styling product like Tecni Art's Dual Stylers Bouncy & Tender. This will add a little extra soft definition without getting that crunchy, “I just used too much gel” look. Next, let your hair air dry or use a blow dryer with low heat and a diffuser. When completely dry, shake or gently rake out the twists with your fingers for a soft-but-defined look without the frizz.

Softer Is Better

Curls that crunch are out. Way out. Modern curls are soft, flexible, and bouncy. For naturally curly hair that is totally on point, NYC stylist Pepper Pastor suggests lightly combing in a styling gel while your hair is wet. "When you comb curly hair and put in a product like that, it starts to form a really beautiful wave pattern," she says. "Let that air dry, undisturbed, and you'll be left with a beautiful controlled curl once it's dry."

Get The Right Cut

In the hands of a stylist who does not understand the nature of curly hair, you can end up with a cut that doesn’t maximize the potential of your wavy locks. The most ideal cut and style is one that allows your hair to bounce and move instead of looking heavy and weighed down. Don’t subject your hair to an inexperienced stylist when it comes time for your next cut. Make an appointment with one of the stylists at our hair salon who understands curly hair and let us bring your curls to life.

Moisturize Like Your Life Depends On It

Curly hair tends to be drier than most other hair types simply because of its structure. Natural oils from the roots have a difficult time traveling down those spiraling strands, so hair has challenge staying supple and healthy. Because of this, adding extra moisture is a must. The curlier your hair, the more hydration it needs. A weekly moisturizing mask can work wonders. Applying an oil like Mythic Oil to the ends of your hair after showering can also be beneficial.

Shampoo Less

Less is more when it comes to shampooing. Washing curly hair about 3 times a week is all that is necessary for it to stay cleansed and healthy. Washing more often will strip away natural oils and precious moisture.
On your shampoo days, opt for a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, preferably products that are sulfate-free. On your no-shampoo days, use a dry shampoo at the roots, if needed, to absorb excess oil. If your curls fall flat, you can re-dampen them and use a thickening product or mousse anywhere that you need a boost.
Stylist Drew Schaefering also offers another helpful tip: “When you're showering between washes, wet and massage your hair and scalp the way you would with shampoo, rinsing well, and conditioning the ends. This helps your hair's natural oils travel from root to end while rinsing away the salt that may build up on your scalp." He says you'll notice a cleaner scalp and less dry strands this way.

Skip The Dryer

Just as over washing is a no-no, so is over drying. Blasting your hair with the highest heat setting on a blow dryer is a sure-fire way to leave it fried and gasping for hydration. Curls do best when they are allowed to air dry naturally. Simply blot with a soft towel or jersey type fabric after showering, apply a styling product, and then let it go. If blow drying is needed, always use the coolest temperature setting and use a diffuser on the nozzle of the dryer.
