Hair Color Definitions
With new hair color trends popping up all the time, it can be hard to keep everything straight. From Highlights to Balayage and everything in-between, all of these terms can seem impossible to figure out. In order to help you out, we have put together a list to help define some of the most popular hair coloring trends. Get in the know about your hair color (and ensure you actually get what you want) by brushing up on your salon vocab.
Color Touch-up
Permanent and/or semi-permanent colors require a Color Touch-up every four to six weeks, as new hair appears from the scalp. A half inch to three quarter inch is considered a Color Touch-up. New hair growth (outgrowth) more than three quarter inch from the scalp is considered an “All Over Color Touch- up” as it will require more product used to cover the new hair growth.
All Over Hair Color
All Over Hair Color is a single-process hair color done on outgrowth more than three quarter inch from the scalp. All Over Color is a one-step process that involves coating the hair with a single shade of color on the entire length of the hair shaft and requires the use of more product than a Color Touch- up.
Full Highlights
A full highlight involves highlighting hair in every section of your head from the front hair line to the nape of the neck and everywhere in between using foils. Many clients that love the look of a Full Highlight will opt to alternate between Full and Partial Highlight appointments.
Partial Highlights
A Partial Highlight is literally a Highlight service that applies Highlights to only part of your head, generally the top half or the top and side sections of your head. A Partial Highlight service uses about 20 foils or less to foil the crown, roots and side hairline. A Partial Highlight should be used when a client wants a more subtle look than a full Highlight or many clients that love the look of a Full
Highlight will opt to alternate between Full and Partial Highlight. It's important to note that a Partial Highlight service does not mean foils will be placed around the entire head – just the top.
Babylights
Babylights are delicate highlights created using very fine pieces of hair to mimic the subtle, dimensional hair color seen on children’s hair. While the process is simple it is time-consuming as it requires your stylist to take itsy-bitsy sections of hair to create the look.
Balayage
Balayage is a French word meaning to sweep or to paint. It’s a freehand hair coloring technique that gives a really blended natural look with no harsh or obvious re-growth lines.
Ombre`
Ombré is the gradual lightening of hair, and is French for “shaded” or “shading.” The Ombré hair color transition typically starts darker at the roots and becomes lighter toward the ends of hair.
Color Melting
It is when three colors blend into the hair seamlessly. You shouldn't be able to tell when one hair color ends and another begins.
