Why do people get extensions?

There are a variety of reasons why people want professional hair extensions, including: To cover up hair loss or thinning hair; To change your look for a special event; To add length and volume; To help grow out a short haircut; To experiment with fantasy colors without altering or damaging the natural hair; or just to add a touch of glamour to everyday life.

Can you order specific types, textures, and colors of human hair for extension clients?

Absolutely! We are all about accommodating the unique style requests of every client. No matter how outrageous you want to get, Heather will make your unique style ideas work.

Are there any specific hair types that should NOT get extensions?

No. Every hair type is different and requires a specific type of extension to fit its unique needs, but Heather will always find the style and application method that works for you and your hair.

Do you have experience applying extensions to African American hair?

Yes! Heather has extensive experience cutting, styling, coloring, and applying extensions to African American textured hair. However, we currently only offer Fusion, Tape-in, Loc-in (Microbead), and Clip-in extensions. While tracks and weave extensions are not currently available, we hope to provide these services soon.

How much do extensions cost?

Since we customize all extensions for individual client needs and hair types, extension pricing can be quite variable. But if we had to provide a general cost estimate, it would be anywhere from $200 to $2,500 depending on the type of hair, amount of hair, method of attachment, and any additional styling.

How often do I need to maintain my hair extensions?

Typically, every 6 to 8 weeks is the average for a maintenance schedule.

How long does it take to get hair extensions?

Generally, the process can take anywhere from several hours to a full day, depending on the type and amount of extensions being added to your hair.

What happens when my extensions start to grow out?

That depends on which type of extensions you have. Some extensions are reusable and other are not. Fusion Bond extensions require that you remove the original extensions periodically and replace them with a new set. However, Loc-in (Microbead) and Tape-In extensions are reusable, which means they only need periodic maintenance and lifting but not replacement.

I've heard horror stories about hair extensions getting tangled up and matted. How can I prevent that from happening?

Whenever hair extensions tangle, it is almost always an issue of hair quality—natural human hair extensions will behave much more like your own natural hair, while synthetic hair is much more prone to tangling and matting. The reason you hear so many tangled extension stories is because quality human hair is expensive, while synthetic and lower quality human hair extensions are cheaper and more accessible. In other words, "you get what you pay for" with hair extensions.

Natural human hair extensions are superior because the cuticles of each strand run in the same direction. Once the hair is cut from the donor's head it is kept in the same formation and left virtually unprocessed—resulting in healthy, shiny, and natural looking extension.

Lesser quality human hair is taken after it has already fallen out or been cut from the donor's head. It is often gathered up from brushes or off the floor, then stripped of its cuticles and coated with a silicone layer to make it appear shiny. After a few washes, the silicone layer wears off and the hair becomes tangled and unruly.

Tangling is usually not an issue with higher quality extensions, such as those provided by HB Hair and Extensions.  However, if your high quality hair extensions do tangle, simply use a wide-toothed comb to detangle. Always start from the bottom of the hair shaft and and work your way up while holding the top part to keep it from shedding or stretching.

Are all of your extensions high quality and made from natural human hair?

Yes, all of the extension brands we carry are top-of-the-line in quality. Every brand of extension we carry is also made from natural human hair—except for Dome Extensions, which are synthetic.

How are hair extensions attached?

Hair extensions can be attached using a variety of methods, including: braiding, tiny locs, heat clamps, and fusion sewing. Some extensions can even be clipped-in. Schedule a consultation with Heather Bourgeois to discuss which method of extension attachment is right for you.

What types of human hair are used for hair extensions?

The main types of human hair available are European, Indian, and Asian hair. However, HB Hair and Extensions can order virtually any hair type, color, and texture at your request. There is an extension for everyone and we can help you find it.

Will extensions damage my hair?

Extensions will not damage your hair as long as proper application, care, and maintenance practices are observed. That is why it is crucial to choose a reputable salon, such as HB Hair and Extensions, to oversee your hair extension application and maintenance. Call 985.778.6180 to schedule a consultation with Heather Bourgeois to discuss which hair extensions are the best fit for your lifestyle.

What does Heather do differently that prevents extensions from damaging my hair?

Drawing on her years of education and experience, Heather is expertly trained to help you select the right extensions for your hair and your lifestyle needs. After performing an assessment of your hair type, condition, and styling needs, Heather explains the care maintenance procedures required for your particular style. Armed with the knowledge of how to care for your extensions, the risk of damage is virtually nonexistent.

Can I brush, curl, blowdry and wash my hair extensions?

Yes! You can blow dry, curl, brush, and wash your hair extensions. Just remember to treat your extensions carefully when washing or styling to keep them looking tip-top. For example, when brushing your extensions remember to hold the hair and work from the bottom to the top when working out tangles. You can wash your extensions everyday if you like, but they will actually stay clean and curled for days. While hair will dry more quickly if you use blow dryers, flat irons, and other heat styling tools, we suggest letting your hair air-dry and using a wide-toothed comb to detangle.

How do I wash my hair extensions?

Wash your extensions in one direction, from top to bottom. It's also best to avoid washing your hair upside down, as this can result in tangling. Always use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners that are formulated specifically for dry hair. Always wash your hair right after swimming (in a pool or in salt water) and apply a leave-in conditioner to maintain moisture levels. When brushing or detangling your hair, always start from the bottom and work your way up while holding the top securely with your hand to prevent unnecessary pulling on the extension.

Can I color or perm my hair extensions?

Yes! However, if you do decide to perm or color your hair extensions it is best to use a semi- permanent color or color conditioner and to avoid peroxide entirely, as many hair extensions have already been processed and sterilized with a chemical treatment.

What type of hair products should I use?

The best choice for shampoos, conditioners, and styling products are those that are specifically formulated for dry hair and add moisture back into the hair. Products formulated for oily hair or stripping products that remove chlorine and other product build-up should not be used, as they will leave the hair dry. Use styling products containing low-to-no alcohol. It's also a great idea to get into the habit of spraying leave-in conditioner on the ends to maintain rich moisture.

Can I still do sports and other high impact activities with extensions, or will excessive movement and sweating degrade them?

Yes, you can absolutely participate in high impact sports activities with your extensions! As long as you care for them properly and keep up with their regular maintenance, you should not have a problem. If you are unsure about how to care for your extensions, request a detailed explanation form your haircare professional.

Can I swim in chlorinated pools and/or saltwater?

Swimming in chlorine-treated pools and hot tubs is definitely okay, just make sure to wash your hair right after swimming. We recommend avoiding swimming in the ocean or in salt water pools, as the salt removes moisture from the hair and can cause it to tangle. If you do go swimming with your extensions in chlorinated water or salt water, it is a great idea to add a spray-in conditioner immediately after.

Will anyone know I am wearing hair extensions?

When properly applied, no one will be able to tell that you are wearing hair extensions. Heather Bourgeois is expertly trained to apply extensions as discretly as possible, and is happy to assist you in choosing the right color and curl pattern for your extensions to be virtually undetectable.
